How to handle the aftermath of a car accident

Most Connecticut readers do everything they can to drive safely and avoid car crashes. However, accidents still happen and knowing what to do in the moments following a collision can be very important for insurance claims and any potential legal action.

The first thing that drivers should do after a crash is take a deep breath and try to remain calm. A level-headed mindset will make it easier to help others and gather the information needed by insurance agents, police officers and lawyers. Next, drivers should call 911 and see if anyone is in need of medical assistance. If it is safe to leave the damaged vehicles where they are, drivers should do so. However, if it's unsafe, it's best to move the vehicles to the side of the street.

Once all safety precautions have been taken, drivers should start documenting the crash scene by taking pictures and jotting down what they remember about the crash. They should also gather contact information from any witnesses and get contact and insurance information from all other drivers involved. When police officers arrive on the scene, drivers should fully cooperate with the investigation and remember not to claim responsibility. The cause of the crash will be determined through investigations by police, insurance companies and legal professionals.

Car accidents can occur for many different reasons, including distracted driving, drunk driving, speeding and drowsy driving. If investigators determine that a negligent driver is responsible for a crash, legal action may be warranted in civil court. A personal injury attorney could help prepare a victim's claim and work to negotiate a fair settlement that covers medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and property loss. If a victim dies as a result of a car crash, his or her family could sue for funeral expenses, lost income and more.
